Planning An Event: If You Think You Can T, You Re Right.

It was their company s first ever breakfast seminar. Sally Thompson had never designed a seminar before. She knew the start time, the finish time and had a list of presentations that had to be made but could she make it fit. Remember that, for maximum impact, each hour of an event should be divided equally into one third listening, one third discussing and one third doing. So, for every hour you really only need a script for twenty minutes and, if you are using a PowerPoint type presentation, a well-paced speaker will talk to one slide of the presentation every 3 minutes on average. You therefore need around 7 text slides each with no more than 7 bullet points to generate a one-hour chunk of the event. This is obviously a rough guide but when you consider writing event material in this way, it can remove some of the...

Who Am I Being ?

Who am I being right now. Who was I being in that situation. These are questions I ask myself every day. I want to know. If I am interacting and the interaction feels uncomfortable--who am I being that this feels so bad. Over the years I have created many images of myself which I find myself defending, attacking, or portraying to others. In my book, The Road Home, I call these false views of self. The Arbinger Institute, authors of Leadership and Self Deception a must read book , call these self justifying images. A few weeks ago I found myself in a conversation where the other person became very impatient with me. I, then, became impatient with her impatience. I called attention to her impatience and made it clear I didn t like it. The next day I asked myself: Who was I being that the person talking to me became...

How Good Is Good Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that can be found in all parts of the body. It does not mix with blood, and it has to be carried in the bloodstream through packages called lipoproteins. There are 2 important types of lipoproteins that affect the risk for heart disease: HDL high-density lipoprotein and LDL low-density lipoprotein . HDL is what we called good cholesterol while LDL is bad cholesterol. HDL carries cholesterol in the blood, and back to the liver for it to be removed from the body. LDL deposits cholesterol and is responsible for its build-up and blockage in the arteries. For years, good cholesterol HDL has been considered as being able to counteract bad cholesterol LDL , or even prevent heart disease. Nonetheless, its goodness has been questioned by some scientists. Two recent studies, one...

Carpal Tunnel Relief - Is Exercise The Solution?

Carpal tunnel Syndrome CTS is one of many musculoskeletal injuries listed under the broader terms of Repetitive Strain Injury RSI or Cumulative Trauma Disorder CTD . A number of other injuries listed under these terms, but that are not exclusively caused by a repetitive strain injury or cumulative trauma disorder include Guyon s Syndrome, Tendonitis, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Medial and Lateral Epicondylitis and Trigger Finger. Carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive strain injuries are caused by excessive overuse of a muscle or group of muscles in a unidirectional movement pattern. Examples would include typing, wringing a washcloth and using a computer mouse. All of the movement patterns involve motion against resistance in one direction flexion. This one-way motion does not actually have to involve repetitive...

Color Psychology -- A Key To Effective Logo Design

Color is an instant communicator with which we connect instantly and subliminally. Whether our emotional and psychological responses to color are shaped by socialization or completely inborn, they are very real and very powerful. It is almost as if the human mind is hardwired to respond to color. Marketing researchers have noticed the powerful connection between color and consumer client reactions. Reams of academic research using carefully controlled experiments backs the conclusion that color makes a difference in how people perceive a product or logo. Work outside the ivory tower confirms the validity of that research. Companies have discovered that adding a color to a product or its logo, or changing a color palette outright can have a massive impact on sales. The reaction of the human mind to color happens in an...
